How to Add a Custom Map to a Garrys Mod Server Print

  • 13

Garry's Mod supports the ability to use custom maps on your server. There are maps with spooky haunted houses, island paradises, spaceships, and much, much more! With such variety, there are infinite possibilities with how you can create your Garry's Mod server!

To add a custom map to a Garry's Mod server, proceed to download the map you would like to use. You can install a custom map through a Steam workshop collection and manually by downloading a map online.

Installing a Custom Map through a Steam Workshop Collection

  1. Create a Steam Workshop Collection that includes the custom workshop map you would like to use on your server.

  2. Add that Steam Workshop Collection to your Garry's Mod server.

  3. After adding that collection, restart your server.

Your server will download the Steam Workshop Collection, including the custom map you added to your collection as your server comes online.

  1. Once your server is online, on your control panel click FTP File Access.

  2. In your server's FTP, click to edit the garrysmod.properties file.

In that file, locate the map= and custom_map= settings.

  1. In those settings, add the name of the custom map you installed.

  2. Once done, save those changes and then restart your server to load that custom map!

Installing a Custom Map Manually from an Outside Source

  1. Locate the custom map that you would like to install and download that map. Here is a great website for locating custom Garry's Mod maps.

Garry's Mod maps will often download as a .zip or .bsp file.

  1. Now that you have that map downloaded, on your server's control panel click FTP File Access.

  2. In your server's FTP, go to the location: /garrysmod/garrysmod/maps/

  3. At that location, click Upload and upload that map file.

If the map file you downloaded was a .zip file, select that file and then at the top of your FTP click Unzip. This will unpack the map's files into your maps folder.

  1. Once unpacked, go back to the main directory of your FTP.

  2. In your server's FTP, click to edit the garrysmod.properties file.

In that file, locate the map= and custom_map= settings.

  1. In those settings, add the name of the custom map you installed.

Ensure that you only put the map name and not the full map file's name. For example, if the map was named tower.bsp, you would only put tower as the map name.

  1. Once done, save those changes and then restart your server to load that custom map!

You have now successfully added a custom map on your Garry's Mod server!

You can now join your server and enjoy the adventures you'll experience through custom maps.
