Prefixes define a player's role on a server and add a layer of uniqueness. Owners, Donors, and Members alike, players can see who is who on a server through prefixes. Looking to set up prefixes for the first time? Or you're having issues getting prefixes to work? Either way, you're in the right place!
Installing the Requirements to Setup Prefixes
Before you can set up prefixes, you'll need to ensure you have all the proper requirements.
Server Type - Ensure you're running a server type that supports Minecraft plugins.
*Such as Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, Cauldron, etc.
Plugin Requirements - Creating prefixes requires that you have a permissions plugin for creating groups with prefixes, a chat manager plugin for displaying those prefixes, and the plugin Vault, which is often required for chat manager plugins.
Permissions plugin - For a permissions plugin, we recommend LuckPerms, PermissionsEx, or GroupManager. The permissions plugin you use will need to support prefixes. A server can only support one permissions plugin.
Vault plugin - Vault is a permission, chat, & economy API that allows plugins to easily hook together into these systems. EssentialsChat requires Vault for prefixes and other chat plugins may also require Vault in order for prefixes to display properly.
Setting Up Prefixes
With all the requirements installed, prefixes will now need to be set up within the permissions plugin.
LuckPerms: /lp group <group> meta setprefix <prefix>
PermissionsEx: /pex group <group> prefix <prefix>
GroupManager: /mangaddv <group> prefix <prefix>
*If you enter commands in your server's console, ensure you do not include the / before the command.
Once prefixes are set up properly, you will see those appear in your in-game chat!
You have now successfully setup prefixes on your Minecraft server!
